About

Strawberry Blonde Bakery bakes in Ottawa, and everything that leaves the kitchen is vegan, gluten-free, nut free and kosher. The bakery describes its mission as making a place where people with alternative diets and food allergies can buy a treat without having to worry about cross contamination, and without giving up taste or looks.

The rule holds at the door of the kitchen. Gluten, wheat, eggs, dairy, peanuts and tree nuts are never used and never brought in, and the bakery asks its suppliers for a spec sheet on every ingredient. Soy and mustard do appear in some items and are flagged on the product pages; sesame is not used at all; the oats and oat milk are certified gluten-free. All of the baking is done on site.

The bakery's own site was already posting updates in 2013. On 1 January that year it announced it had gone completely gluten-free and nut free; by the end of March its products were on the shelf at Herb & Spice on Bank Street; and on 4 November 2013 it opened its first retail shop at 114B Grange Ave, near Wellington and Holland. By the summer of 2019 the contact page listed two shops, having added 767 Silver Seven Road in Kanata.

Today the counter is at 111 Richmond Rd in Westboro, open for walk-ins seven days a week, with a café serving soy, oat and coconut milk and no cow's milk at all. The Kanata shop is marked temporarily closed on the site, and Canada-wide shipping is paused. Orders are placed through the online store with a minimum of three days' notice, and custom cakes and sugar cookies go through the specialty orders address, with seven days for fondant, tiered or shaped cakes.

Beyond the two shops, the bakery wholesales across Ontario — its own map and list run from Ottawa grocers and hotels to Farm Boy stores as far away as London, Hamilton and Toronto. It delivers in the Ottawa and Gatineau area and is on Uber Eats, DoorDash and Skip the Dishes. Strawberry Blonde Bakery sponsored UAFest in 2024.

Where to find them

Strawberry Blonde Bakery is in Ottawa's west end. The open counter is at 111 Richmond Rd in Westboro, on the corner of Richmond and Patricia, with walk-in service seven days a week; the second shop at 767 Silver Seven Road in Kanata, across the street from Costco, is listed as temporarily closed. Delivery covers the Ottawa and Gatineau area for a flat fee, reaching as far west as Carp, as far east as Orleans and as far south as Barrhaven.

UAFest is held in Riverside Park in Carleton Place, which the festival puts at 45 minutes from Ottawa — west of the bakery's delivery zone. For anyone in Lanark County who cannot get into town, the bakery's own wholesale map shows North Folk at 1 Gore St W in Perth, and Farm Boy stores carrying its products at 457 and 6315 Hazeldean Rd and 499 Terry Fox Dr, on the way in.

Questions & answers

Is everything really vegan, gluten-free and nut free?

Yes. The bakery says gluten, wheat, eggs, dairy, peanuts and tree nuts are never used and never come into the kitchen, and it asks suppliers for a spec sheet on every ingredient. Everything is also certified kosher. Soy and mustard are used in some items and are listed on each product page, and the bakery notes the resulting cross-contamination risk even in its soy-free items. Sesame is not used.

How far in advance do I need to order?

The bakery requires a minimum of three days' notice on all orders, placed through its online store, and it may ask for more around the holidays. Custom cakes and custom sugar cookies go by email to specialtyorders@strawberryblondebakery.com, also with three days' notice, and seven days for fondant, tiered or shaped cakes. Individual items are ordered in a minimum of six per flavour, and the bakery does not set product aside.

Do they deliver?

Yes, in the Ottawa and Gatineau area for a flat $14.95 plus tax, choosing the delivery option at checkout. Their published limits are Carp to the west, Orleans to the east and Barrhaven to the south, plus Gatineau. They also sell through Uber Eats, DoorDash and Skip the Dishes. Black Forest and strawberry shortcake cakes and cupcakes are excluded from delivery.

Where can I buy their baking outside their own shop?

The bakery keeps a map and a list of its stockists on its wholesale page, covering grocers, cafés and hotels across Ontario — Farm Boy, Metro, Natural Food Pantry, Herb & Spice, Thyme & Again, the Ottawa Bagelshop, the Château Laurier and the Brookstreet Hotel among them. The Lanark County listing on that map is North Folk at 1 Gore St W in Perth; the map also shows Farm Boy at 457 and 6315 Hazeldean Rd and 499 Terry Fox Dr in Ottawa's west end.

Is the Kanata shop open?

No. The bakery's site marks 767 Silver Seven Rd, Unit 17 in Kanata as temporarily closed, and notes that Canada-wide shipping is unavailable at this time. The Westboro shop at 111 Richmond Rd takes walk-ins seven days a week: 10 to 4 on Monday and Tuesday, 9 to 5 Wednesday and Thursday, 8 to 5 Friday, 8 to 4 Saturday and 9 to 4 Sunday.
